Importance of sleep is underrated and people find it hard to believe lack of good sleep can actually be the cause of accidents. Yes! Accidents do occur because the driver is busy sleep driving or dozing while on the road. This type of scenario can be avoided by a good sleep. Accidents are not restricted to the road alone, accidents can also occur at places of work like the construction industry or a factory where dangerous machines are used. When a worker is tired as a result of sleep deprivation, they can end up injuring themselves or other colleagues. Therefore the importance of sleep cannot be overemphasized.

Good sleep can be achieved by sleeping on a comfy and good mattress. Imagine sleeping on a hard surface or a very stiff mattress, I doubt you will be able to sleep comfortably. You will end up waking up feeling sleepy and tired despite lying down. You require a good and comfy mattress to enjoy a sound sleep. Technology has come a long way to make our night rest comfortable by providing us with different types of mattresses like the hybrid mattress, waterbed, air bed, latex mattresses, memory foam mattresses just to name a few. WinkBed is an example of an innerspring mattress and hybrid mattress (plus version)

A hybrid mattress is a type of mattress that is made using different components to produce a similar but improved result of the initial creation. WinkBed has two types of mattresses which are the innerspring mattress and hybrid mattress (which contains at least two inches of latex and a pocketed coil support core). They are sold only on the company’s website to completely cut off retailers and save some costs for the customers, considerable, right? There are different types of hybrid mattresses but WinkBed’s ability to provide a great plush feeling with good support is one outstanding feature about the mattress that makes it stand out among other types.

Comfort & Feel

Winkbed has three firmness options, and depending on your taste and preference you can choose between the soft, luxury firm and firm option which are types of the innerspring mattress. The luxury firm is the most common among the three as it is designed to provide comfort for all type of sleeping positions. The luxury firm is not too firm, neither is it too soft, but the soft type is more for sleepers that like to sleep in rather than sleep on and it is exclusively for side sleepers, other types of sleepers may not enjoy sleeping on the soft type.

The firm type is typically for sleepers that prefer firm support particularly through the midsection, but that doesn’t mean the mattress is overly hard. It is for sleepers that prefer sleeping on the mattress rather than in the mattress. With these three types of firmness level, customers are given the opportunity to select the mattress that best suits them.

There is also a plus version of this hybrid mattress for heavy sleepers (sleepers over 300 lbs). Putting heavy sleepers that want to enjoy a luxury medium-firm feel into consideration, the plus version was also made. How thoughtful!

Considering the great length Winkbed went to provide mattresses that will suit different types of sleepers comfort and feel, I give them 4.75 out of 5.

Delivery and Setup

Due to the size of the mattress, the mattress does not come in a box, it is not compressed. Mattresses are available for customers living in the contiguous U.S, but unfortunately for customers living in Alaska, Hawaii, or other international destinations (including addresses in Canada), delivery is not available.

Standard delivery is FREE OF CHARGE, which means the mattress will be delivered to your home. White glove delivery is in charge of delivery but they also provide services like in-home mattress assembly and old mattress removal which is optional to customers. However, these services are not free of charge, the total charges for these two services are $149; $99 for in-house assembly and $50 for old mattress removal. All old mattresses removed are usually donated to charities or recycled.

Delivery is done within seven to fourteen working days after ordering.

I rate Winkbed 4 out of 5.

Off Gassing

Almost all mattresses off-gas when they are bought new, the chemical gas are not entirely harmful. One of the reasons why ventilation is highly recommended in the house is off-gassing, most new products release a smell. Some mattresses have a smell for long but most good mattresses do not off-gas for long. Winkbed is an example, although some customers complained of the off-gassing, a majority agreed the smell wore off after a day.

I recommend adequate ventilation around the house if you are the type that cannot tolerate the faintest smell a new mattress, and also you can use a mattress protector.

For off-gassing, I rate Winkbed 4.5 out of 5

Motion Reduction

Light sleepers can wake up at the slightest of sound or disturbance, these type of people will not enjoy their sleep, if they keep waking up every now and then when their partners wake up to visit the toilet or turn around on the bed. Winkbed were able to isolate movements to a minimal level but not entirely, light sleepers still have the risk of getting disturbed during sleep when they are sleeping with a restless partner, but if you are a deep sleeper like me, the motion isolation is acceptable. A mattress containing memory foam does a better job of motion isolation.

Winkbed mattress can only minimally isolate motion.

Temperature

Winkbed mattress is covered with TENCEL, a botanically based fiber gotten from the Eucalyptus plant. It has natural cooling and moisture wicking properties, which makes it a good fabric for sleeping cool. With this cover, you have nothing to worry about during hot weather as the cover helps to cool the bed and helps you to sleep cool.

Even with the awesome cover that has a natural cooling ability, Winkbed also provides a Coolcontrol mattress base. When ordering your Winkbed mattress you can also purchase the Coolcontrol proprietary base that works to adjust the temperature of each side of the mattress throughout the night. The Coolcontrol uses the same technology as the ones used to heat and cool car seats, it has the ability to lower the temperature of the mattress by 10 degrees and also increase it by 30 degrees. It is optional and cost $2,200, seems expensive but it will be worth it if you are the type that is sensitive to temperature change.

For temperature, I rate Winkbed 4.75 out of 5

Edge Support

Sharing bed with someone that likes to take the whole space may leave you having to sleep at the edge of the mattress, sometimes when you find yourself in this type of situation and the mattress you are using has no edge support, you may end up finding yourself on the floor the next morning. Edge support provides support for sleepers even at the edge of the mattress. Winkbed has made effort to provide that support.

Innerspring usually have more support than strictly foam mattresses, but even the Winkbed hybrid mattress was made in an effort to provide edge support to sleepers, it was designed to allow sleepers to get close to the side of the mattress without the feeling like they are going to fall out of the bed. There is support from the center of the bed to the edge, and some customers even reviewed they enjoyed the mattress a little more while they were sleeping on the edge because it gave more support.

I rate Winkbed 4.65 out 5.

Quality of Materials

There are two different types of Winkbed mattresses; the innerspring and the hybrid, both have different types of materials. Innerspring is made of comfort layers of 1.5 PCF polyfoam, a second layer of 1.5 PCF gel polyfoam, a third layer of pocketed microcoils, and a bottom lumbar pad made of compressed cotton while the support core features a layer of pocketed coils that is surrounded by 1.5 PCF polyfoam. Polyfoam is a major material used by a lot of companies. It is similar to memory foam but does not have the viscoelastic properties a memory foam possess, which allows sleepers to sink in, which makes polyfoam more firml and have quicker bounce-back when releasing pressure. Polyfoam is more resilient and has the ability to efficiently and effectively support the heavier part of the body when sleeping; the shoulder and hips. This makes it siutable in terms of providing comfort and support at the same time.

There are three standards of polyfoam and they are gauged in terms of durability. Some important things to take note of these types of polyfoam is the fact that;

  • The lower grade polyfoam has a lower bounce back and durability;

  • Softness or firmness does not indicate quality. Actually, this might be confusing as ordinarily when we see a mattress that is very soft or firm, we assume it is of high quality, but in case of polyfoam, it does not; and

  • The density of each polyfoam layer indicates how durable it can be.

The type of polyfoam that was used in making the innerspring mattress is the high density (HD) polyfoam. It has a density of between 1.5 to 1.7. The two other types of polyfoam are the conventional polyfoam and high resilience polyfoam. It is usually hard to make soft foam in layers with densities higher than high density foam, which is why HD polyfoam is commonly used in the comfort layer. The advantage of HD polyfoam include durability, low cost, effectively fit in 1-2 inch layers or in tandem with firmer foams and lastly, it is a good choice for a comfort layer.

However polyfoam is a chemical produced and as a result, it is not eco-friendly.

The third layer of the comfort layer of the innerspring mattress is made of pocketed microcoils. Microcoils also called minicoils are coils that are smaller than the standard innerspring coils. Innerspring coils are usually 6" or 8" high. Some microcoils are considerably high, having 4”, but most microcoils are short, with 1" to 2½". They are also narrower than innerspring coils and made with lighter gauge wire.

Microcoils are the latest development in mattress springs, but there are different types. They are sometimes referred to as micro pocket coils because they are made into pocket coils. Independent coils are wrapped in fabric pockets, a design now common in innersprings like Winkbed. The coils work independently and conform to the body contours, helping to relieve pressure and also isolate motion. Primarily microcoils are designed to provide comfort.

Polyfoam and microcoils are the two major materials used in making the innerspring winkbed mattress. Thanks to the polyfoam and microcoils in the comfort layer, the winkbed is able to provide comfort and contours to the body of the sleepers but does not sink in.

The hybrid winkbed is primarily made of 2 layers of latex mattress in the comfort layer and pocketed coil in the support layer. The use of latex mattress in the support layer is a very good as latex provides a very comfy feeling but does not sink in, since the hybrid winkbed is made for plus firmness option, the mattress should not be too soft as it will not be comfortable for a heavy sleeper. The use of pocketed coils in the support layers helps the mattress to contour to the body of the sleepers and has a quicker bounce-back thanks to the presence of the polyfoam in the comfort and support layer.

I rate winkbed 4.7 out of 5.

Trial & Warranty

Ordering products online come with great risk especially when ordering from an infant company, as the product may seem not to be as we hoped or read online. To avoid cases of customer dissatisfaction, most companies provide trials for customers, a period during which if a customer is not satisfied with the product, he/she can return the product and also get a refund. Winkbed is also not left out; they offer customers a 101-night trial for all mattresses. However, customers must use the mattress for at least 30 days before the can request for a full refund from the company. Customers can request a full refund after the mandatory 30 days or they can request for another bed with a different firmness level.

Those that desire to exchange the mattress to another with a different firmness level will be charged $49.99; this charge will cover removal of original mattress and costs of recycling or donating to charity. For the customers that just want to return the mattress without exchanging for another one, Winkbed will be responsible for removal and pick up of the mattress and they will also cover the restocking and process costs. However, customers will not be refunded for white glory delivery service or old mattress removal. Refund is sent to customers within five working days after their mattress has been recycled or donated.

Winkbed provides a 10-year limited warranty on all mattresses. The warranty period starts from the day the mattress is delivered to your doorstep. Winkbed will repair or replace mattresses at their own will. Your bed might get defected during the time frame and they won’t repair or replace it for you. For more information on their warranty terms and condition, you will have to email them directly. The warranty coverage is exclusively for the original purchaser of the mattress.

Customers will be responsible for the transportation, shipping and freight charges related to the repair or replacement of any defective mattress.

Overall Value & Recommendation

Winkbed are relatively new to the market and as a result there are not many reviews on them from customers, therefore, it will be hard to get a reviewer that shares the performance of the mattress over a long period of time. Also, if you are after a 100% organic mattress, Winkbed is not the mattress for you. Although it is certified to have no toxic chemicals, it does not meet the standard of an eco-friendly mattress.

Asides that, Winkbed is a very good mattress that comes at an affordable price, compared to other mattresses of its caliber, it is priced at $1300-$1600 depending on the type. It is ideal for couples, especially for sex and comes with different firmness level.

Let us not also forget it comes with free shipping. If you want a durable bed that will serve you for a good number of years, Winkbed mattress should be an ideal option.

Customer Reviews

John Auer wrote in his review

”Overall I really liked the mattress and is one of the better mattresses I have reviewed.  It was very comfortable and offered some great support.  If you are in the market for a high-end innerspring mattress, this one can keep up with much more expensive models you’ll find in the standard mattress stores.  If you’re up for trying a new mattress company, WinkBeds is one to look at for sure”
