Comfort & Feel

If you’re in the market for an all-foam mattress, then you probably want a soft sleep that will allow you to sink into the fabric of the bed. That’s what the Eight Sleep provides – a lush sleeping surface that ‘hugs’ the sleeper.

The mattress is marketed as slightly softer than medium, meaning it falls at roughly 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which means it's actually a firmer bed.

The top comfort layer has latex-like properties, so you still feel supported even when sinking in. A layer of contouring foam means your body’s main pressure points are supported too.

This mattress is soft enough to make sure dead-limbs are a thing of the past, as it allows for excellent blood circulation.

We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.5 out of 5 for comfort and feel.

Motion Reduction

This is where memory-foam mattresses really earn their money – motion reduction. The Eight Sleep works so well at isolating motion that your dog could be playing at one end of the bed while you sleep seamlessly on the other.

When you sink into the top layer of the Eight Sleep, you’ll notice that the indentation doesn’t warp or shift the entire structure of the bed. The softness of the memory foam turns each section of your bed into a little world of its own. Getting in and out of bed at night won’t disturb your partner. You can also comfortably sit coffee-cups or wine-glasses on the bed without worrying about them being spilled by the bed’s springiness. (Consume drinks on your mattress at your own risk!)

The Eight Sleep provides effortless motion reduction capabilities and performs even better than is expected of typical memory-foam mattresses.

We give the Eight Sleep 4.75 out of 5 for motion reduction.

Temperature

One of the most hotly contested issues when it comes to mattress choice is temperature. Online complaints often come down to differing interpretations of hot and cold, and will always be affected by individual body size, shape, health etc.

With that said, the Eight Sleep employs its Sleep Tracker technology to regulate temperature, meaning that you are in control of your bed’s temperature.

The Smart Cover technology can increase heat if you programme it to, while its absorbent, breathable material means it also facilitates quicker cooling. Notably, this function is available separately, on both sides of the bed, meaning you and your partner can set your own bespoke sleeping conditions that won’t interfere with each other.

The other materials that make up the Eight Sleep are also highly breathable and promote heat regulation where they can.

It should be noted that memory-foam mattresses do tend do trap heat more than hybrids. If you choose not to use the Sleep Tracker Smart Cover, then be aware that you may have a harder time remaining cool during the night.

Overall, the addition of the smart cover means the Eight Sleep performs better than most memory-foam mattresses on the market.

We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.65 out of 5 for temperature.

Delivery and Setup

Delivery of the Eight Sleep mattress us absolutely free. It is roll-packed and compressed and packed into a cardboard box before being shipped directly to your doorstep. It usually takes 5-7 business days from the time you buy until the bed arrives (but it could be sooner, depending upon your location). Once you receive the mattress we recommend bringing it to the room you want it in before opening it. After it is in the desired room remove it from the box using scissors to cut the plastic – but be very careful not to damage the fabric of the bed when you do so. Once the plastic is cut free you can watch your bed expand! It will be fully expanded within 24 hours or so, but you will be able to sleep on it before then.

We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.65 out of 5 for delivery and set-up.

Off-Gassing

When you open your new mattress you might notice a faint odour that emanates from the materials. This is nothing to worry about, and is typical of bringing a new piece of furniture into your house.

Natural and organic mattresses often times have the strongest smell, even though people associate them with no gassing. A smell is normal and no matter what brand you buy there will be some smell. I associate it with a new car or a new shoe smell. In most cases the smell will either be gone or very faint within 12-36 hours. I would recommend using a mattress protector; so once the mattress airs out you should apply your protector under your sheets, and by then there should barely be any smell at all.

For maximum effect, stand the mattress up on its own to allow it to air better, but at the end of the day, the ‘new bed smell’ is just a normal part of buying a mattress.

This mattress did emit a slight scent upon opening, but aired out within 24-36 hours. All in all it performs no worse than most memory-foam mattresses.

We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.65 out of 5 for off-gassing.

Quality of Materials

  • Let’s start with the optional Sleep Tracking layer – this is a removable layer which can be attached on other beds, and it links to a phone to provide in-depth details about your sleep patterns. The Sleep Tracker keeps track of your movements during the night, your sleep position, your breathing rate and many more features which can be read from your smart-phone.

  • This Eight Sleep Smart Mattress is powered via a hub that plugs in to your wi-fi receiver. Data readings can then be picked up by your digital device.

  • In addition to its useful data gathering abilities, the Sleep Tracker can also control the temperature of your bed, much like an electric blanket. A simple control on your digital receiver can change the temperature of the bed at the click of a button. An alarm function comes in useful, while an integrated white-noise player will carry you off to sleep seamlessly. It should also be noted that the bed warming function operates simultaneously on both sides of the bed, allowing for partners to sleep at different temperatures in the same bed.

  • As for the memory foam, the top layer is made up of 2-inches of Reactive Foam. Eight Sleep advertise this layer as having the ‘hugability’ of foam with the responsiveness of latex. This is the comfort layer which will suck you into the plush surface and provide a luxurious sleep.

  • The next layer is 2-inches of contouring memory foam for hip and back support. This layer reacts to your body and provides support where you need it most.

  • A 2-inch layer of transition foam acts as a buffer between the layers, and minimises motion transference on the top layers.

  • Finally, the base layer is made up of 4-inches of high density support foam. This is the foundation of the bed and gives the memory foam layers on top and solid base of structural support.

  • All of this is wrapped up in a thin, breathable polyester cover which provides a fair level of comfort and air circulation.

  • Smart mattresses get their name for a reason. As far as usage of high-tech materials go, the Eight Sleep delivers as expected, while the introduction of the Sleep Tracking technology makes this mattress unique within its market.

  • We give the Eight Sleep 4.65 out of 5 for materials.

Trial & Warranty

  • The Eight Sleep mattress comes with a full 100-night free trial. If you try the mattress out and decide you don’t like it you can just email them and receive a full refund. There is no need to re-box the mattress, as Eight Sleep do not re-use old mattresses. Instead the manufacturer will come to an agreement with the customer about the best way to dispose of the bed, and this should not be a source of concern for the consumer.

  • In addition to the free trial, Eight Sleep also ship all of their mattresses with a 10-year limited warranty. If the product shows any signs of manufacturer defect during this time, it can be returned for repair or replacement. If the memory foam starts to sag any deeper than 1-inch, you can act upon your warranty and claim for repairs or replacement.

  • The peripherals purchased with the mattress, including pillows, sheets and the Sleep Tracking layer, are all covered with a 1-year warranty.

  • The Eight Sleep offers some good features relating to trials and warranty, with a fair trial period, and lengthy 10-year warranty. However many brands offer much longer trial periods, so the Eight Sleep narrowly misses out on full marks here.

  • We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.55 out of 5 for trials and warranty.

Customer Reviews

  • Verified buyer on Amazon, Allison gives it 5 out of 5, and says:

  • “I've been sleeping on the Eight for about a month now and wanted to leave my thoughts about the product. The setup was rather easy. The hardest part was having to re-make my bed! You just put the cover over the top of the mattress and plug the hub into the side of the mattress, and power it up. The app walks you through the wifi setup which all in all takes about 5 minutes. I find the device to be made from very high quality materials. For the price it was nice to feel like I got my money's worth on a durable product when first putting it together. The cover has a nice looking and soft topper material. The LED lighting on the hub is subtle, and gives a cool smart home feel to the device.”

  • Verified Buyer on Amazon, J. McCoy only gives it 4 out of 5, adding:

  • “I really wanted to like this product. The first one I bought was a Christmas present for my wife (and me.) it worked for about 15 minutes and then the main control unit would not turn on anymore. I returned it for a replacement assuming I had just received a lemon. We've now had the new one exactly 32 days and it too has died. Of course, we are past our 30 day return period, so I guess we are stuck with a dead product. Great concept, but there is clearly a fatal flaw in the manufacturing of this product. I would strongly suggest that - if you are considering buying this product - you wait until all of the kinks are worked out.”

  • While verified buyer, Marco, says:

  • “Love how seamless my Eight is. I don’t look at the app everyday but I get my weekly email with all the metrics. Pretty awesome, because in the past I had to open Sleep Cycle app every night. My partner is a big heating user while I like cold things and we enjoy the splitting side to warm only one side of the bed. I had some issues during the pairing to find my wifi but they helped me to solve it and since then everything has been smooth.”

  • The Eight Sleep review site currently hosts a 4.5 out of 5 review score across 815 reviews. The ratings on third-party sites are comparable.

  • The only issue that seems to pop up is people having trouble with the digital nature of the sleep tracker. Otherwise, reviews for the Eight Sleep are overwhelmingly positive.

  • We give the Eight Sleep Mattress 4.5 out of 5 for customer reviews.

Overall Value & Recommendation

The Eight Sleep ships with 2 free pillows worth $150. The queen-size model currently goes for $1,099 on the Eight Sleep website, although discounts can sometimes be found online.

This kind of price for a queen-size, smart-mattress represents pretty good value for money – finding a queen-size luxury mattress near the $1,000 mark is quite rare, and should be considered a major plus-point.

The Sleep Tracker layer retails at around $300 on its own, so you can deduct this still if you choose not to purchase the Smart Cover.

At its competitive price and with its broad range of novel features, the Eight Sleep does well as far as value is concerned.

We give the Eight Sleep 4.5 out of 5 for overall value and recommendation.

We recommend this mattress if you:

  • Want to sink in to your bed.

  • Demand control of your sleeping temperature.

  • Want to use Smart technology to analyze your sleep.

  • Need good motion reduction.

  • Have a partner with different sleeping requirements.

  • Would benefit from white-noise sounds.

  • Want an in-built alarm clock in your mattress.

All in all, the Eight Sleep brings some new moves to the table, and takes its place as one of the more affordable options in the premium mattress market.
