The Nolah Mattress advertises itself to be made of cooler material than a memory foam mattress, promises to be made of more durable stuff than latex and claims four times better support relief for those with aching bones... but does it live up to its name?

Boasting a better mattress for cool sleeping; the Nolah does not use any viscoelastic chemicals – which means that their version of memory foam does not use body heat to mold to your shape. This can be a plus or a minus, depending on how healthy your spine is. Nolah refers to their brand of foam as 'Air foam' and have it patented, just to be safe.

We have scoured the internet for all the customer reviews and honest opinions we can find about this mattress, and we have assembled that information here for you to peruse at your leisure... so if you are in the market for a new mattress; read on, and see if the Nolah is the one for you!

Comfort & Feel

When it comes to comfort this mattress has a few mixed reviews. Some consumers say it is perfect, others not so. One or two have complained that, when first taken out of the packaging, the mattress is very hard. This is probably due to the Air foam instead of memory foam, as the Air Foam does not require your body heat to mold it and can therefore take a few days to wear in...like a good pair of shoes...

Consumers found that this bed offered particularly good support to the hips and lower back of those that sleep on their side. Couples also reported that they were not disturbed in the night when their partners moved around, making this bed a good choice if you sleep beside someone who has trouble keeping still. It also scored highly amid those who suffer from night sweats, as its cooling abilities kept them sweat-free till morning.

The Nolah mattress also features a Viscose material cover which promises to 'wick away moisture' during the night to keep you dry and sweat-free. A good idea in theory, but we happen to know that 'Viscose Material' is another term for Rayon, which is a fairly delicate material that is dry-clean only and that, depending on water density, can be a fairly non-durable cloth. We give the Nolah mattress a 5.6 out of 10 rating for firmness.

We scored the Nolah mattress a 4.6 out of 5 for comfort and feel.

Delivery and Setup

The delivery of the Nolah mattress is FREE! It will be compressed and rolled up to fit into a cardboard box in a new method of mattress transportation that takes up less space and simultaneously combats CO2 levels. It will generally take 8-10 business days from the time that you order you mattress to the time that it arrives – but this could be sooner, depending on your location.

Once you receive your mattress, we strongly advise you to take it into the room that you want to place it in before you open it. After you have it in the desired room, remove it from the box using a knife or scissors (but be very careful not to cut the fabric of the bed). Once free of plastic and box you can step back and watch your new mattress expand! Within no more than 24 hours your mattress should be fully expanded, but you can sleep on it before then.

Enjoy your new mattress, safe in the knowledge that having it brought straight to your door hasn't cost you a single cent!

Off Gassing

When you remove the plastic and box from your new Nolah mattress, you may notice that it gives off a slight “new mattress” smell. “off-gassing” for me is a slightly misleading term, because no matter what brand you are looking at they are going to have a smell. Natural or organic mattresses tend to give off the most smell, contrary to the popular belief that they will smell the least. A smell is normal and, no matter which brand you buy, please remember that there will be a smell. I associate it with the smell of new shoes or a new car.

In most cases the smell will either have dissipated or become incredibly faint 12-36 hours after unpacking your mattress. Once you cover it with a mattress protector and some fresh sheets there will be minimum to no smell whatsoever, and you will be free to enjoy your new Nolah mattress!

Temperature

The Nolah mattress boasts of being a permanently cool temperature and makes a lot of profit from people who sweat at night. So whether or not this mattress scores highly in this category is really down to personal preference.

From all consumer accounts that we can see, the mattress does the job that it promises and filters all the moisture away from your skin, leaving you having a perfectly cool and undisturbed good nights rest. We have not found a single review to say that it was uncomfortably warm, and they have the scientifically engineered proof of such in the materials that they use. In short, this is a cool mattress that imitates the feeling of turning over the pillow for the cold side – but all night long. This is the ideal bed for anyone who regularly suffers from hot flushes... you know who you are.

We scored the Nolah mattress highly for temperature, because it does what it says it will do with no room for any argument, and that is something one can respect in a product. However, please do not buy this mattress if you are perpetually cold during the night, choose a warmer one and don't risk the disappointment!

We scored the Nolah a cool 4.7 out of 5 for temperature.

Motion Reduction

As we already pointed out; reviews say that the couples who tested this bed did not get disturbed by one another during the night, so we can safely say that this mattress is going to score highly here. Nolah themselves say that a combination between their supportive high-resilience foam (which allows a little bounce) and their cooling Nolah Air Foam (which molds to your shape better than memory foam – according to Nolah) that makes for such good motion reduction in this bed.

This mattress is designed to give extra comfort and support to the body's pressure points and thereby also reduce the amount of movement you are subjected to in your sleep. We couldn't find a single review that said it was creaky, excessively bouncy or that it kept people awake at night... and that's an all round good job, for a mattress that might easily be placed atop a squeaky bed frame!

For movement reduction we scored this mattress an exceptionally good 4.7 out of 5.

Edge Support

Nolah performs slightly above average to comparable beds in regards to edge support.

As to be expected of foam beds, you will sink down deeper than sitting on innersprings while sitting on the edge. Most of your time will be spent sleeping on the mattress, so this is only a small detail for most buyers.

While lying down on the edge, the bottom layer of polyurethane offers firm support. You will not roll off the mattress, but stay comfortably in place. This is crucial for individuals who sleep on or near the edge. For edge support we rate Nolah at 4.5/5

Quality of Materials

As already mentioned, the Nolah mattress sports its own scientifically engineered version of memory foam that does make it a little different to everyone else. The patented Air Foam they use in the top two inches of their mattress makes for cooler sleeping and better contouring to your body.

The bottom layer of this mattress is made up of a seven inch layer or high-density foam, Nolah are very proud of the fact that this layer is one hundred percent made in America. They also say it is more durable than regular memory foam and is guaranteed to last for years to come. Since this is a reasonably new company we have no testaments to that, and we are a little suspicious that the Nolah might just be made of regular high-density memory foam at its base, except that the manufacturer have chosen to leave out the 'memory' part for the purposes of advertising. Again we have no proof of this, just a sneaking suspicion...

In the layer between Nolah have placed a one inch thick layer of supportive high-resilience foam, and in this they are definitely a little different. Normally, the second layer down of a memory foam mattress will be made from gels and latex in order to provide some bounce and push, Not so with Nolah, who use this foam instead and gives super responsive bounce that won't wake you up at night.

We scored the Nolah a fair 4.5 out of 5 for materials.

Trial & Warranty

The team at Nolah are offering a reasonably generous 120 night risk-free trial with this mattress. If you sleep on it for a few nights and aren't impressed, you just send it back again. Many companies offer deals such as this one and you can generally gouge the faith a company has in its product judging by how generous the free trial period is. A hundred and twenty days is not to be sniffed at, and is about 20 days longer than what you might consider to be the 'industry standard' of a hundred days. However, we feel that since this is a mattress that has the potential to drastically affect your sleeping temperature, that a slightly longer trial period would be beneficial. Consumers should have the opportunity to try such a mattress through all four seasons before they commit to buy.

Nolah also offer a surprisingly acceptable fifteen year guarantee with their mattresses – speaking truly to how durable they perceive them to be... and fifteen years is not too shabby! If it becomes damaged in that time they will either repair it or replace it, completely free of charge. That is a deal that is not to be sniffed at, and comes pretty close to the lifetime guarantee offered by many luxury mattress producers- making the Nolah a pretty good investment in the long term.

Nolah also offer free shipping and returns, making it an especially safe mattress to purchase.

With so much foresight from the makers over at Nolah, how could we score them any less than 4.6 out of 5 for trials and warranties.

Trial & Warranty 4.6/5

Overall Value & Recommendation

The Nolah starts from $549 for a regular double sized mattress; which isn't too high a price when you measure it against the cost of a hybrid or memory foam bed. For those that like a cool nights sleep, undisturbed by your partner/dog/kiddies climbing in because of nightmares... what we would say is that the Nolah mattress would be a great bed at an affordable cost, especially for those that sleep on their side.

It scores highly for price and temperature, and has little need for improvement. The Nolah does seem to keep you cool as promised, and offers excellent motion reduction to help out all the light sleepers out there.

The bottom line of all this is that the Nolah is fabulous value for money no matter which way you swing it, and little room for improvement means that this is a superb product all on its own.

We give the Nolah mattress a 4.6 out of 5 for overall value and recommendation.

Customer Reviews

Consumers are loving the cool feel and supportive aspects of this mattress. Marty S. says:

“I bought my mattress about 2 months ago. Wasn’t able to use it until now. Being in the box that long didn’t cause any issues. Finally using the mattress, I find it quite comfortable. The first day it was incredibly hard, possibly just because it was still fresh. The next few days it has certainly softened up a bit more and has made it more comfy to sleep on. I’ve noticed I’ve been sleeping a bit better too. I used to toss and turn a lot while sleeping, than I’d wake my self up constantly throughout the night. I’ve noticed I’ve been sleeping longer and not as much tossing and turning. So I find the bed to be quite an improvement from the previous one. I’m still getting used to it so it’s not totally perfect yet, but still enjoyable. The website is fairly easy to browse and works well enough. The cooling feature of the mattress is neat. If you are just looking to relax without sheets, you can certainly feel the mattress is a bit cooler. It’s nice for cutting down the night sweats. We’ll see how well it fairs against a warm summer around me. Overall I would recommend this mattress.”

While Miranda M. says:

“My husband and I are both side sleepers, and this bed is extremely comfortable for that. We don’t notice when the other moves around at night/changes sleeping positions. Would highly recommend this bed!”

Stuart Latta also testified to the super coolness of this mattress:

“The first week on Nolah and we love it so far. Before we used to sleep on memory foam, but the problem is that it often becomes too hot so we can't sleep all night through. We bought the Nolah mattress because the company claims it to be "temperature neutral" so it sleeps cooler than our traditional memory foam. So far we haven't been disappointed. You can really feel that it doesn't trap in heat as we are used to from our old memory foam mattress. This is a 5 star mattress, but we started with 4 stars until we have slept on it a couple of more weeks. If it continues to sleep cool, we'll update our review to full 5 stars.”

And you can't get fairer than that!
