The Hybrid from IDLE Sleep is a combination of the two best materials that are used in the manufacture of premium bedding – memory foam and springs.

The springs are actually a 6-inch layer of individually pocketed coils which can each react in isolation. This separates the IDLE Sleep Hybrid from traditional spring mattresses which are not usually individually pocketed.

The easy movement of the individual coils complements the reflexivity and responsiveness of the double-foam layer on top, creating a solid, comfortable mattress that can be used in a variety of situations. This mattress can be used on slats, boxes, adjustable beds, or even on its own on a flat surface.

The Hybrid also presents convenient solutions for temperature regulation, and uses a variety of useful materials, including the company’s patented IDLE Foam, which is both flexible and resilient.

Also, a very unique selling point of the Hybrid is the fact that it is double-sided, meaning you’re really getting two mattresses for the price of one. This is standard for mattresses in the IDLE Sleep line, and adds a lot to the mattress’s overall value.

As always, it makes sense to get to know the product before you buy it. That’s why we’ve put this review together – to save you time and equip you with the knowledge you need to make the right choice. So read on, and benefit from our in-depth review of the IDLE Sleep Hybrid mattress.

Comfort & Feel

Like all IDLE Sleep mattresses, the Hybrid is double-sided, and as such comes with the choice of two firmness options within one mattress.

One comfort option for the mattress is considered a medium in terms of firmness, measuring a 5.5 to 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The other comfort option for the mattress is a little firmer, and falls at around 7 to 7.5 on the firmness scale.

Besides the quilting layer stitched into the cover, the main comfort in the hybrid comes from the 2-inch layer of IDLE Cooling Buoyancy Foam. This is a custom blend foam of IDLE’s own unique manufacture, and they claim it has 4x better pressure relief than traditional memory foam. You can feel this comfort layer when you lay on the bed – it gives a memory-foam feel to the mattress even though it’s a hybrid.

An additional foam layer comes in the form of 1-inch of IDLE Air Flow Response Foam. This thin but effective layer adds some bounce and support on top of the buoyancy foam, and is aerated to allow for maximum airflow.

When lying on the bed, you definitely feel the contouring responsiveness of the memory foam, while the coil layer underneath gives a nice feeling of bounce and spring. The Hybrid aims for the best of both worlds, and it succeeds in providing memory-foam comfort combined with coil-spring support.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.75 out of 5 for comfort and feel.

Delivery & Setup

IDLE will ship the mattress for free within 4-10 business days depending upon your location. The extended delivery time is because all IDLE Sleep mattresses are made to order. They will keep you informed of your delivery’s progress and notify you of any changes. There is also the opportunity to pick up your mattress yourself if you choose, by picking the appropriate options at checkout.

IDLE mattresses are made by hand in 2 factories across the U.S, so nobody should be waiting too long. When the mattress arrives, move it into your desired room before opening, as it will expand quickly and may be a little tricky to handle.

Take special care when cutting the mattress from its wrappings and be sure not to puncture the materials.

Overall, the IDLE Sleep Hybrid is simple to set-up and comes fully boxed and delivered to your doorstep. Yes, the delivery time is lengthened due to the weight, but this cannot be avoided and is still free of charge. The additional option to pick up your mattress yourself will come in handy for some people.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4 out of 5 for delivery and set-up.

Motion Reduction

If you’re looking into buying a hybrid mattress then it’s probably safe to assume that motion reduction is not your primary concern. In case you don’t already know – memory foam mattresses provide excellent motion reduction but sacrifice bounce and support. Hybrid mattresses on the other hand don’t perform quite as well at motion reduction, but they do offer improved spring and stability.

This mattress performs admirably for a hybrid, and won’t present too many issues. You will notice it when someone gets in or out of the bed when you’re in it, but this is to be expected to some extent. Only all-foam mattresses can isolate motion with any great efficiency, but the IDLE Sleep Hybrid does well considering its materials.

As long as you don’t intend to use your bed as a trampoline, you shouldn’t be troubled by motion disturbance.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.75 out of 5 for motion reduction.

Off Gassing

As with all mattresses, when you open the Hybrid you may notice a faint ‘new mattress smell’. This is pretty common and would be there no matter what brand you choose. Just like a new couch, a new car, or a new book, your new mattress will likely emit a slight scent for the first day or so.

Natural and organic mattresses are known to have more pungent smells, even though people often associate them with less off-gassing. The Hybrid does use natural materials, but uses CertiPUR-US certified foams and doesn’t suffer from extensive off-gassing. Any scent you pick up from the mattress upon opening is completely harmless and will dissipate eventually.

IDLE Sleep state on their website:

“Our mattresses are made in the USA and are not roll packed long so off-gassing is minimal.  You will experience a “new” smell which is normal for any mattress. Any smell will dissipate within a day or two.”

For maximum effect, stand your mattress up on its end, and allow it to ‘air out’ for 24-hours before you use it. We recommend applying a mattress protector after the airing out process. After you lay your bed sheets on top of that, any smell should be gone.

A ‘new bed smell’ is a normal part of buying any mattress. The Hybrid performs no worse than most mattresses.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.85 out of 5 for off-gassing.

Temperature

IDLE use their own custom Thermocool fabric which has some rather unique features. The fabric uses smart fiber cross-sections which respond to your body’s thermal emissions. In simpler terms – the Thermocool fabric helps you stay cool when you’re warm, and it cools you down when you’re too hot.

In addition, the Hybrid comes with a cooling layer of comfort foam which is designed to let go of heat as it comes. And the second layer of comfort foam is completely aerated across its entire surface, meaning there’s no weak link in the chain as far as air-flow is concerned.

All-foam mattresses struggle to efficiently get rid of heat because of their compacted design, but hybrids manage to leap that particular obstacle due to the open-aired nature of the coil layer. As heat travels down the mattress, through the foam layers, it has the chance to escape into the coils, where it can dissipate easily.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.8 out of 5 for temperature.

Edge Support

The Hybrid excels here with its Quantum Edge technology. The edge-to-edge reinforced coils form a structured frame around the outside of the mattress, meaning you get full use of the bed and don’t have to worry about sinkage on the outside.

Many hybrids do not reinforce the edges of their coil system, yet hybrids still provide better edge support and stability than pure memory-foam mattresses. The Hybrid doubles down on its edge support with its Quantum Edge construction. This design is shown to be 26% more durable than foam models, and 24% more malleable at the same time – further reducing wear and tear, as well as edge-warping, over time.

You will not roll out of this mattress, and it should combat any edge-issues quite capably due to its dedicated edge-support.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.8 out of 5 for edge support.

Materials

IDLE Sleep employs five distinct layers of sleep technology to produce the Hybrid. It uses one layer of coils, encased on both sides by latex and quilted foam. Let’s take a look at the materials in-depth.

The cover is an all Natural Organic Cotton material which is environmentally friendly and allows for exceptional air-flow.

The next layer is 1-inch of IDLE Quilting Foam which is quilted into the cover to provide a lush, comfortable surface.

Then we have a 1-inch layer of IDLE Air Flow Response Foam, which is completely aerated to allow air to circulate efficiently.

Then comes the main comfort layer – 2-inches of Cooling Buoyancy Foam. This layer is custom made to dissipate heat upon contact, and provides soft comfort and flexibility.

The middle section is a 6-inch layer of Quantum Edge to Edge Pocketed Coils. This layer gives sturdy support to the latex and foam on top, while supporting the edges of the bed. The coils react individually, not as a mass, meaning that isolation of movement can be achieved, with optimum motion reduction.

From here, the first three layers repeat themselves, since this bed can be flipped both ways. The difference in firmness is achieved by using different strengths of latex on either side.

IDLE Sleep state that their aerated IDLE Foam technology is superior to ‘gel-layers’ often found in other mattresses. Gel-infused foams are marketed as cooling-layers, however IDLE stand by their own process and see no need for such materials.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.8 out of 5 for materials.

Trial & Warranty

The IDLE mattress comes with a 120-night trial period, but there is a mandatory 30 nights a customer must use with the mattress before returning the mattress. Some people take a little while before getting used to a new mattress, so the mandatory 30 nights is to ensure a customer has used enough time with the mattress before deciding to return it. After the 30 nights, a customer is still not satisfied with the mattress, he/she can return it and ask for a refund or exchange it for another mattress. Charges involved in returning of the mattress are handled by the company.

IDLE mattress offers a 20 years warranty period. During this period, any defective mattress will be replaced or repaired by the company. There are terms and conditions to abide by if you want to get full benefit of the warranty coverage. One of the important things to take note before asking for warranty coverage is, make sure you are the original purchaser of the mattress to avoid any misunderstanding. Also, make sure you place the mattress on an appropriate surface; any defect that is as a result for your carelessness will not be settled by the company.  After your warranty period has expired and you want to buy another IDLE mattress, the company will sell the mattress for you at half the original price. Incredible!

Customer Reviews

New reviews pop up every day on the IDLE website, and the overwhelming majority of them are 5-stars out of 5. Let’s take a look at what the customers had to say.

Steven in Iowa said:

“An Idle Hybrid in medium was the 3rd online mattress I had tried. Finally one I will keep! I didn't hear about Idle until after trying the other 2 and I'm glad I finally did come across them since I like the idea of a flip mattress. Maybe this will help potential buyers reading these reviews as I did before buying. I weigh 220 lbs and I am 6' 1" and I tend to like a softer mattress. The medium as they told me before I bought is on the softer side of medium. Having tried 2 other "medium" mattresses I think their assessment was very accurate. So if you like middle of the road but maybe a touch softer the medium should be great. I understand there is not really a mattress that will solve all of my problems, but I am sleeping much better and find that I have less aches and pains. These really are nice mattresses and I would recommend them to anyone.”

Meanwhile, Jo and Sam in Wyoming said:

“Like the title says, we took a chance and we love it. We have always had traditional inner spring mattresses but read some reviews about the all foam bed and were convinced to try it out. After all, there is a 120 night sleep trial so why not? I have owned a foam bed before and always slept really hot and would sweat at night. Whatever the foam is they use in this bed must have been made at Hogwarts because it is magical! I never sweat, I feel supported and the overall comfort is just ridiculously satisfying. It is really a wonderful bed.”

While Troy in Tennessee said:

“I hadn't heard of this brand before but I guess there are a lot of new companies coming out, but I love this bed. I have owned a Tempurpedic and Stearns and Foster bed which are pretty expensive beds and this bed is right up there with that kind of quality but for far less. I actually Googled the components of the bed before I bought it, and was impressed with how well it is made. I would highly recommend this bed to anyone looking for a quality bed without going bankrupt.”

The reviews for this mattress are almost completely positive. Any issues raised by customers are dealt with swiftly by the very responsive support team on the IDLE website.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid Mattress

Overall Value & Recommendation

With the queen-size option coming in at $1,499 before the $300 off coupon, the Hybrid lands around the average price range for a good sized modern hybrid.

However, unlike most mattresses out there, the IDLE Sleep Hybrid contains two sleeping surfaces, and can be flipped to extend its lifespan. This fact alone makes the Hybrid a much smarter investment than many choices on the market.

Financing options can be arranged on the manufacturer website, while the lengthy free trial period and generous warranty also contribute to the Hybrid’s excellent value. Overall, the Hybrid comes with high expectations given the reputation of its manufacturer. The array of modern technologies coupled with the flip-bed option, makes this a mattress with terrific value, and a real competitor in the luxury bedding world.

We give the IDLE Sleep Hybrid 4.8 out of 5 for overall value and recommendation.

We recommend this mattress if you:

  • Want a mattress with excellent temperature control.

  • Want the option of two sides with two different firmness options.

  • Prefer the extra support provided by hybrid technology.

  • Desire excellent edge-support.

  • Need a mattress that will last a long time, perhaps twice as long as competitors.
